Sustainable Livehood

Life and Death

A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope up with and recover from the stresses and shocks,by maintaining or enhancing its capabilities and assets both now and in the future without undermining the natural resources. It becomes difficult for small farmers to earn their livelihood due to the poor productivity of land, lack of water resources and livestock,as well as inefficient use of forests along with lack of capabilities and inadequate resources. Realizing this serious situation, poverty alleviation has been the major agenda of the SJSM.  Thus, various community development programmes have been initiated to build the capabilities of the poor. These programmes provide skill-oriented training and supply critical agricultural inputs as there are plenty of opportunities for small farmers to improve their livelihood through various on-farm and non-farm activities, by making use of appropriate technologies. It is necessary to establish backward and forward integration to develop series of value chains involving all the stakeholders on a common platform. This can bring down the cost of production and value addition for the commodities produced by small farmers.

Agriculture being the main source of rural employment for small and marginal farmers, it is necessary to develop a suitable farming system, which can generate year-round employment and substantial income to sustain their livelihood. However, agriculture allied activities like dairy, goatary, poultry and some skill-based income generation activities can played major role in the rural economy. With this belief, SJSM has initiated various income generation activities such as dairy, fishery, food and fruit product processing, herbal medicine production by forming people’s cooperative societies.
