Introduction

Shramjivi Janata Sahayyak Mandal (SJSM) is a Non-Government Organisation working for rural development and upliftment of the socially and economically backward communities residing in the remote, inaccessible areas of Western Ghat region including Satara and Raigad district of Maharashtra since 1977.Since its inception, SJSM’s aim has remained committed to develop people’s organizations and institutions, relying on the notion that sustainable development processesevolvethrough people’sown involvement and initiative. Therefore SJSM emphasizes on motivating people themselves (end beneficiary) by infusing them withrelevant knowledge and information, establishing linkages with external institutions to facilitate an encompassing, gender-equitable development process.

SJSM’s first phase of work between 1977 and 1990was mainly aimed at raising awareness and organising people around the cause of social development. The thrust was mainly on social mobilization, local leadership development, eradication of traditional customs (such as child marriages, superstitions) and advocating primary school education in villages.
During the second phase ranging from 1991 to 2005, SJSM implemented projects on afforestation, watershed development and ground water management, with an intention to preserve and promote natural resources in the region and at the same time address the climatic issues of the drought prone areas ofSatara district.

In the third phase between 2006 and 2012, SJSM expanded its work in the tribal area of the neighboring Konkan region. Organising and coordinating with the primitive and most backward Katkari tribe was a daunting and challenging task for SJSM. One of the most exploited communities, the Katkari tribe has remained isolated from mainstream communities, resides on the mountain slopes by heavily survivingon forest produce and abundant natural resources.

Since the year 2014-15, we at SJSMhave further enhanced our focus on Natural Resource Management, dealing with soil and water conservation work, agriculture development, sustainable livelihood, women empowerment, tribal development. SJSM also initiated capacity building of the cooperatives in the region.
